Personality of American Staffordshire Terriers
The American Staffordshire Terrier, or Am Staff, is a strong and courageous dog. They are athletically built and intelligent, which makes them great for dog sports such as obedience, agility, conformation, and tracking.
They are loving and attentive to their owners, and are usually gentle around children. However, they may be a bit too rough and dominant for smaller children.
The Am Staff makes an excellent watchdog, and will protect its family at all costs and are fearless guardians. They are a bit reserved around strangers, and may bark as a warning to people they don’t know. They are also wary of other dogs and strange pets. Although they are true protectors, they can be very friendly as long as their owners are around.
They learn quickly but are best for a strong and confident owner.
History of American Staffordshire Terrier Dogs
These dogs originated in the United States in the early 1800s. There seems to be some confusion over how the breed actually got its name. What is known, is that this terrier dog breed shares the same bloodline as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These terriers were brought to the United States where American dog breeders increased the dog’s size and weight.
When dog fighting was banned in the United States in 1900, this breed was developed into two distinct breeds. One was a dog bred for fighting (illegal fighting), which is known today as the American Pit Bull Terrier. The other was bred for the show ring and become known as the American Staffordshire Terrier. Both are now recognized as separate and distinct dog breeds.
The American Staffordshire Terrier was officially recognized by the AKC in 1936.
American Staffordshire Terrier Care and Grooming
These terriers can do well in both moderately hot as well as cool temperature. Because of this they are able to spend lots of time outdoors. Although not a requirement, the American Staffordshire Terrier enjoys the freedom of a large, fenced yard.
Provide plenty of daily exercise to keep up with their very high energy levels. Games requiring vigorous activity are great. So is a long brisk walk on leash. These dogs will also enjoy a good jog, or even a long run, with its owner.
The Am Staff only needs a light brushing every few weeks to remove any dead hair from their short-haired coat. Use a firm bristle brush. Bathe only when necessary.
This breed is an average shedder.
