Personality of the Chihuahua Dog Breed
The Chihuahua is one of the favorite dogs of the Toy Group and among many dog lovers. They have a spicy little character and are very devoted and loyal dogs. Not all dogs will have the same bold personality. Some are very intense and will have a larger than life attitude. Other may be extremely shy and timid.
For being such small dogs, they can be courageous, adventurous, and strong willed.
They tend to be reserved around strangers and can be aggressive towards other dogs, although most dogs will be larger than the Chihuahua. They are great with other household pets.
They are generally not recommended for children. This is not because they are not good with children, but rather because many people tend to allow to them to get away with behaviors that would be unacceptable from larger dogs. This can lead to behavior issues that can include snapping, jealousy, and even aggression.
History of the Chihuahua Dog Breed
The Chihuahua originated in Mexico and is the oldest dog breed on the American Continent. They got their name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua.
These dogs were considered sacred by the Pre-Columbian Indians and were popular pets among the upper class in Indian society. They were not introduced to Europe until sometime in the 19th Century.
The dog breeds that were used to develop the Chihuahua breed is unclear. However, some experts believe that they descended from the Fennec Fox.
The breed was officially registered by the American Kennel Club in 1904 as a member of the Toy Group.
The Chihuahua Dog Breed Care and Grooming
Although it is such a tiny dog do not think that the Chihuahua does not regular exercise. However, they can get most of their exercise just by running around and playing in an apartment or small house. But just like every other dog, they still need some outdoor time. Take them on a short walk or play with them in a safely enclosed area.
Grooming requirements are a minor concern for the little Chihuahua. The breed comes in two varieties, the short-haired and the long-haired. Short-haired Chihuahuas require very little brushing, once weekly should be sufficient. The long-haired dog will require a bit more grooming with a twice weekly brushing. You can find an excellent quality dog brushes from Chris Christensen products.
These dogs are average shedders, but because they are so small the amount of hair is not very noticeable.
Health Problems of the Chihuahua Dog Breed
The average life expectancy of the Chihuahua dog breed is about fifteen years or longer. There have been cases of Chihuahuas living for as long as twenty years.
There are no major health concerns for this breed.
These other issues can occur, but are rarely seen:
